Bories Refrigerator National Historical Monument
In Puerto Bories, located 5 km north of Puerto Natales in Chilean Patagonia, stands the historic Bories Cold-Storage Plant, declared a National Historic Monument in 1999. This site is renowned for its post-Victorian English industrial architecture and brick constructions.
In the late 19th century, European pioneers boosted the local sheep farming industry, initially led by Rodolfo Stubenrauch in 1905. The Tierra del Fuego Exploitation Society built the Bories Cold-Storage Plant in 1915, turning it into a major center for sheep slaughtering and processing.
Today, visitors can explore these historic facilities, which include a still-operational 1914 power plant. There are ongoing projects to establish a site museum and restore the old pier to accommodate tourist cruises, ensuring the preservation of the region's historical and cultural legacy.
