Itinerary

Departure from Puerto Natales at 06:30 am and direct transfer to the Las Torres sector, where we arrive at “Reserva Cerro Paine”, the starting point of the trail.

Un estrecho sendero de montaña que atraviesa el bosque de lenga en el valle del Ascencio.

There we receive an instructional briefing from our guide. Start of the hike. We take the path towards the valley and, after 10 minutes of walking, we cross an old suspension bridge over the Ascencio River.

About 150 metres further on there is a fork: the left-hand branch leads to the Base of Las Torres. Then comes an hour of switchbacks on a marked slope with sparse vegetation. The climb continues past another stream and, after 45 minutes, you reach Camping Chileno on the opposite bank of the Ascencio River, in the shade of a lenga forest, on a moderate slope, crossing several streams that come down from Almirante Nieto.

After roughly one hour and 10 minutes from Camping Chileno, at 700 metres above sea level, you reach the foot of the moraine that gives access to the lookout.

From this point the trail gets steeper. First it runs beside a stream and under the shade of the small trees along the edge of the moraine, but higher up the trail disappears as such and you have to keep climbing among the rocks, some of them marked to show the route. About half an hour after the sign at 700 metres above sea level, you reach the eastern end of the lagoon, with a wonderful view of the three towers (Central, Monzino, Dagostini) and of the Peineta and Nido de Cóndores peaks.

After resting and having lunch in this extraordinary scenic setting, unique on the planet, we begin our return along the same trail until we reach the starting point, where our driver will be waiting to take us back to Puerto Natales at the end of the day.

"Lovely guide Maria (great knowledge of flora/fauna). Bus ride had great music. Trail was crowded and paying 3-day pass for 1-day trip was annoying."
