In the middle of the Strait of Magellan, about 37 kilometers from Punta Arenas, lies an island that belongs more to the birds than to people. Magdalena Island, together with the nearby Marta islet, forms the Los Pingüinos Natural Monument: one of the largest penguin colonies in southern Chile.

The Magellanic penguin is the main character here. A census carried out between 2001 and 2002 recorded close to 63,000 breeding pairs, which gives a sense of the scale of the spectacle. You walk along a marked path while the birds come and go from their burrows, cross in front of you with little fear and head down toward the sea in groups.

The penguin is not alone. The imperial cormorant, the kelp gull and the black-browed albatross share this refuge. Toward the southwestern end of the island you'll find South American and southern fur seals resting on rocks battered by the southern wind.

The landscape is crowned by the Magdalena Island lighthouse, a historic navigation landmark in the strait, now cared for by Chile's National Forestry Corporation (CONAF), which also manages and protects the monument. That's why fishing is banned in the surrounding waters: the island works as a sanctuary, and a monitoring program assesses the effect of visits on the colony.

An important note about timing: the visiting season coincides with the presence of the penguins, which arrive to nest in the austral spring and summer (roughly between October and March). Outside those months the colony disperses and the boat trips don't operate. Since access depends entirely on the sea and on Magellanic weather, departures may be adjusted according to daily conditions.

Access is only by sea from Punta Arenas. If you're planning your route toward Torres del Paine, this crossing is a natural way to make the most of your days near the strait before heading up to the park. Tell your travel advisor which dates you have in mind and we'll see how to add this experience to your trip.
