In the heart of Torres del Paine National Park, far from the busiest trails, Los Perros Glacier appears as a reward for those who venture into the park's deepest route. This viewpoint is part of the Paine Massif Circuit, known among trekkers simply as the "O": the long route that fully encircles the massif and reveals corners that most visitors never get to see.

It is the first glacier to open up before you alongside its lagoon on this trek, usually appearing around the third day of walking. After hours making your way through lenga forests and silent valleys, the ice emerges clinging to the mountain ridge, with that hanging-glacier shape that descends from the heights of Olguín Glacier. The lagoon at its feet, fed by meltwater, completes a scene that feels earned, step by step.

Its name holds a Patagonian story. As the tale goes, during the first expeditions led by John Garner and Óscar Guineo it was common to find wild dogs roaming this sector. That detail stayed on the map and today names the glacier, the lagoon and the nearby campsite.

To understand what you're seeing, it helps to recall how a glacier is born: snow accumulates year after year on the floors and slopes of high mountains, and each snowfall compresses the one before it. When the heat isn't enough to melt all that ice, the mass grows ever thicker and begins to move slowly toward the valley floor, dragging and polishing the rocks in its path. That is, quite literally, what stands before you.

Access to this viewpoint is exclusive to those completing the full "O" circuit, a demanding journey requiring several days of trekking and advance campsite reservations. The usual season runs from October to April; outside those months, several sectors of the circuit remain closed due to snow and conditions. Nearby you'll find the Los Perros Ranger Station and Los Perros Campsite, a natural resting point before tackling the John Gardner Pass the following day, the highest and most demanding stretch of the entire loop.

If you dream of discovering the most intimate Patagonia and walking where the ice still rules, talk to our team: we'll help you plan the "O" with the logistics sorted out so you can simply enjoy the journey.
