Torres del Paine by car? Yes, we can
If your question is if you can drive around Torres del Paine, the answer is yes, but in a 4×4. This has become a very interesting option to enjoy this wonderful landscape from another point of view. Sometimes, it is the most comfortable way to reach remote areas such as the other side of Lake Nordensköjld to photograph the Cuernos del Paine.
In total there are 500 miles of vehicular roads enabled to travel part of the park but if you want to do so you must take into account a lot of things to consider.
We recommend that you take the necessary precautions, as there are no gas stations inside the park. Also you have to be aware of the road conditions and weather, since it is very changeable, winds can reach speeds of 100 km / h mainly in spring and summer.
Although it is true, moving by vehicle through Torres del Paine National Park will not allow you to reach certain points as you would through trekking, however, you can still access several of its attractions:
Grey Lake and Glacier
The Grey Nursery is located 18 km from the Administrative Headquarters, from where it is possible to start a hike that crosses the bridge over the Pingo River and continues to the shore of the lake, where you can appreciate the ice floes. It is also possible to navigate the lake and enjoy the view in front of the glacier.
It is located in the Pehoé sector, only 2 km from the main road. From the parking lot you have to travel 5 minutes to the viewpoint. If you wish to access Los Cuernos Viewpoint, continue along the signposted path. From this point, a journey of approximately one hour begins on the shores of Lake Nordenskjöld and leads to one of the best panoramic views of the Paine Massif.
Cascada río Paine
It is located in the Paine River, in the sector of Laguna Amarga, along the road that leads to Laguna Azul. From this point the Torres del Paine (De Agostini, south; Central and Monzino, north), the three granite needles that gave the name to the park, can be seen.
The shore of this lake is one of the best places to observe the Cuernos del Paine, because the attractiveness of the mountain range is added to the turquoise color of its waters.
From the area next to the Laguna Azul Nursery it is possible to get the best view of Torres del Paine without trekking. This area has an attractive microclimate, reaching temperatures of up to 25º C in summer.
You know, if you’ve already done Circuits W and O, you can get new views of the park by driving it. If your idea is to rent a vehicle, there are several agencies in Puerto Natales, we recommend you do it well in advance because the demand is high. If your idea is an excursion for the day, you must fill the pond because within the park there is no way to get fuel.
If you still don’t know Torres del Paine, we have several excursions and programs for those who want to do trekking and also for those who want other options to know the main attractions of the park.
